On Thursday morning, July 17, 2025, a month-long tree plantation and seedling distribution program was inaugurated at Kabi Jasim Uddin High School in Kutubdia. The program was jointly organized by the national environmental and climate organization Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Waterkeepers Bangladesh, and the Kutubdia Dwip Surakkha Andolon (KDS).
Speaking as the chief guest, Kutubdia Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Kathoyai Pru Marma said, “Global temperatures are rising, and the freshwater level in Kutubdia Island is steadily declining. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating the impacts of global climate change. The rate of deforestation on this island is alarming, and reforestation is not happening at the same pace. Even the trees that are being planted are not being properly cared for.” He welcomed the initiatives of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and urged all students of the school to plant at least one tree in their home yards and take proper care of it.
The event was presided over by Shahidul Islam, Convener of the organization, and conducted by Mizanur Rahman, Joint Member Secretary. Among the speakers were Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Sadat Hossain, Agriculture Officer Asim Kumar Das, Forest Officer Md. Abdul Razzak, Head Teacher Anisur Rahman, Sub-Inspector Hasmat Ali (representing the Officer-in-Charge of Kutubdia Police Station), and local journalists.
Speakers emphasized that to protect the sea-surrounded island of Kutubdia, trees of various species must be planted. The island’s protective mangrove forest (locally known as parabon) is being depleted. Therefore, to safeguard the island’s environment, a coastal greenbelt must be established throughout the region.
Members of the organization, along with teachers and students, attended the event.
