A daylong school-based environmental awareness program was held on Wednesday (7 May, 2025) at Sunbeam School on College Road in Barguna, jointly organized by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh.
In the morning, children participated in a drawing competition, where students of Sunbeam School illustrated the encroachment and pollution of Barguna’s Khakdon River and Bharani Canal. Simultaneously, a school-based debate competition was held on the topic: “Not fossil fuels, only renewable energy can combat climate change.” Students from Collegiate Secondary School and Alhaj Abdul Karim Model High School took part in the debate. In the competition, the opposition team from Barguna Collegiate Secondary School emerged as champions, while the proposition team from Alhaj Abdul Karim Model High School became runners-up.
Over 270 students attended the daylong program.
After the cultural segment, prizes were awarded to the winners of both the drawing and debate competitions by the invited guests.
The event was presided over by Dr. Azmeri Begum, Convener of DHORA’s Barguna branch. The Chief Guest was Pratap Chandra Biswas, former Principal and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sunbeam School. Special guests included Shahriar Shawon, Senior Assistant Admin Officer of Waterkeepers Bangladesh; Advocate Shafiqul Islam Nesar, Mostak Ahmed, and Monowar Hossain of DHORA Barguna; Kazi Sajjad Hossain, Principal of Sunbeam School; Harun-or-Rashid Rinku, Secretary of the Barguna Cricket Umpires Association; Mushfiq Arif, Member Secretary of DHORA Barguna; Md. Al Amin, member of DHORA; and Russell Mahmud, President of Dhrubotara Youth Development Foundation.
