Bangladesh now stands at a critical crossroads in energy and electricity production. As the country progresses on the path of development and climate resilience, the need for a just and sustainable energy transition has become more urgent than ever. The involvement of informed youth is essential—not just as future leaders, but as present-day changemakers.
To amplify youth voices and foster dialogue around just energy transitions, an interactive event titled “Energy Talk: Youth for Just Transition” was held on Monday, June 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at the Liberation War Museum auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The event was organized by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Brighters, Climate Frontier, Eco Network, Environmental Shapers Network, Global Law Thinkers Society (GLTS), Mission Green Bangladesh, OAB Foundation, Sacheton Foundation, Youth Climate Action Network (YOUCAN), Youth Environment Development Organization, and Waterkeepers Bangladesh.
Featured Speakers of the event were Shafiqul Alam, Lead Analyst at IEEFA, Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of CRESL and Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA). They covered the topics on “Sustainable Energy Transition in Bangladesh: Opportunities & Challenges”, “Renewable Energy: Technology, Challenges, and Potential” and “The Climate Movement: Youth & Advocacy” respectively. They discussed Bangladesh’s energy situation, renewable potentials, policy challenges, and the role of youth in climate advocacy. Key participants included youth climate leaders, students, researchers, civil society organizations, and policymakers. Each expert presentation was followed by a live Q&A session.
Shafiqul Alam, Lead Analyst at IEEFA, explained primary vs. secondary energy sources and emphasized reducing carbon emissions. He stressed the importance of home solar systems and pointed out Bangladesh’s lag in energy transition.
Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of CRESL, shared insights into geothermal energy, predicted rising gas demand till 2030, and highlighted the need to reduce foreign dependence through renewable sources.
Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), discussed the qualities of climate warriors, river management challenges, and detailed the movement to protect the Sundarbans from coal-based power projects. He warned about river pollution and upstream infrastructure in neighboring countries impacting Bangladesh’s river systems.
Among the young participants, speakers included Rowman Smita, Rakib Hossain, Jobair Hossain, Yudhishthir Chandra Biswas, Rabiul Awal, and Imran Hossain. Among the guests present were Faisal Ahmed of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Professor Dr. Zahirul Haque, Vice Chancellor of Metropolitan University Sylhet and Mir Mohammad Ali, Assistant Professor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.
Youth representatives gave thoughtful speeches, and over 210 registered youth participants took part in a quiz competition, held at the end of the event. Certificates were awarded to the winners.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Ahsan Rony, Executive Director of Mission Green Bangladesh.
