On Thursday, August 8, at 9 PM, the new 17-member interim government of Bangladesh took their oath of office. On behalf of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, the regional representative organization of Waterkeepers Alliance—a global platform based in the US dedicated to water and climate rights—we extend our heartfelt greetings and congratulations to Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus on his appointment as Chief Adviser to the interim government.
The previous Awami League government was brought to an end on August 5, 2024, following a mass uprising led by students as part of the anti-discrimination movement. In response, the decision was made to form an interim government under the leadership of the globally renowned Dr. Yunus. We believe that the advisory board of this interim government, which has taken an oath to establish a state free of discrimination, will play a crucial role in building the Bangladesh of our dreams by fulfilling the aspirations of all those who sacrificed their lives in the anti-discrimination student movement.
We extend our best wishes for the success of this interim government.
