On Tuesday morning, April 22, 2025, a human chain was organized at Chila Bazar in Mongla to mark World Earth Day. The event was jointly arranged by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Sundarban Rokhhay Amra, and Pashur River Waterkeeper, under this year’s global theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.”
The human chain was presided over by Kamola Sarker, local leader of Dhara-Mongla. Among others present were environmental organizer Md. Hasib Sardar of Sundarban Rokhhay Amra, Pashur River Waterkeeper volunteers Md. Dollar Molla and Mehedi Hasan, and DHORA leaders Ratna Sheikh, Sheela Sardar, and Tanbi Mondol.
In her speech, Kamola Sarker said, “There is no alternative to renewable energy if we want to build a green planet. We must move away from fossil fuels. A fair and green energy transition is now the call of the time for safeguarding the Earth and ensuring energy justice.”
Environmental organizer Md. Hasib Sardar said, “We want to escape the threats of global warming. Our rivers are severely polluted by plastic and polythene. The health of rivers directly impacts human health. To protect the Earth, we must change our way of life.”
Speakers emphasized the urgent need to expand the use of renewable energy to create a clean and green planet. They highlighted that tackling climate change and building a livable world for future generations requires a decisive move away from fossil fuels. They also called for the immediate shutdown of the environmentally destructive Rampal coal-based power plant near the Sundarbans.
“Our environment is our right, and it is everyone’s responsibility to protect it,” they declared.
Speakers further stressed that saving the planet demands adopting environmentally friendly and sustainable development plans, as well as coexisting harmoniously with nature. They called for embracing green energy as the true source of power.
The human chain witnessed participation from farmers, fishers, women, youth, and people from diverse walks of life, all expressing their commitment to work together for environmental protection.
