Khowai River Waterkeeper held a tree-planting event on the banks of the Khowai River in Habiganj to commemorate the silver jubilee of Waterkeeper Alliance, a global organization based in the US focused on water rights and climate change. The event, titled “Greening the Riverside,” took place on Saturday, August 17.
The program was chaired by Khowai River Waterkeeper Tofazzal Sohel. Distinguished guests included Professor Md Ikramul Wadud, a retired principal of Brindavan Government College and environmental advocate; Advocate Mansur Uddin Ahmed Iqbal, the founding president of Habiganj Press Club; poet and social organizer Tahmina Begum Gini; and Badrul Alam Chowdhury, joint general secretary of the Merchant Association Habiganj.
Other speakers at the event included Advocate Bijan Bihari Das, Nature Director Roshan Ara, “Gach Mama” fame Md Raihan, Engineer Mahfuzur Rahman Sadi, Environmentalist Saiful Islam, Businessman Mohibur Rahman, ASARD Chief Executive Md Motakabbir Khan, Mohammad Ujjal Mia, Jontu Sutradhar, Tausif Hossain, and others.
Following the speeches, the guests and local residents planted various species of native trees along the riverbank.
