On Saturday, October 26, the Rotary Club of Habiganj and Khowai River Waterkeeper jointly held a tree-planting event along the Khowai River bank in the Jasher Abda area. Azizur Rahman Manna, President of the Rotary Club of Habiganj Khowai, presided over the event, with Tofazzal Sohel, Khowai River Waterkeeper, delivering the keynote speech on the importance of tree planting and preservation. The event was attended by former Club President Dr. Mohammad Noman Mia, Rotarian Al Noman Tanmoy, prominent tree enthusiast Md. Raihan (affectionately known as “Gach Mama”), Abdul Kadir, Matiur Rahman, Iman Mia, Joynal Mia, Ahmad Ali, Sabbir Mia, Md. Shahjahan, Nurul Haque, and Jasim Uddin.
During the event, speakers highlighted the importance of planting tall trees to help prevent lightning strikes and protect the environment. They stressed that, in addition to lightning protection, trees like palms play a critical role in preventing soil erosion and conserving groundwater. Speakers also discussed the historical significance of palm trees, which once served as natural bird habitats, and encouraged everyone to plant more trees to support environmental preservation. Together, the organizations planted over 200 palm seeds and saplings.
