Program for Climate Justice on the Occasion of the G-20 Conference

A human chain, cycle rally, and thematic skit were displayed in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh of the capital today, September 8, Friday, at 10 am to demand climate justice. Ahead of the G-20 conference, Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Equity BD, Youth Net for Climate Justice, Center for Participatory Research and Development, Brotee, Global Thinkers Society, Bangladesh Farmers Federation, Sundarbans, Coastal Protection Movement, and Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implementation Council jointly organized this Organizes the program.

Sharmin Murshid, chief executive officer of Brotee and president of the program said that the countries belonging to the G20 alliance are the most responsible for the climate crisis. The world is currently facing a crisis due to uncontrolled carbon emissions by industrialized countries. In this context, the responsible countries are required to provide various compensatory economic and technical assistance to the affected countries, but they are not doing so and are working to implement a debt trap for the countries of the Global South. Also, most of the positive decisions that have been taken at various conferences were confined to the conference room. Therefore, through this program, we demand that the G-20 conference adopt a plan for the countries affected by climate change and take effective steps to implement it.

Sharif Jamil, coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, said, "Poor countries like us are facing extreme disasters in the context of climate change. Every time different promises are made at the G20 summit, they play a lifeless role in their implementation. In addition, the countries responsible for climate change avoid their responsibilities and adopt various debt relief programs for the affected countries. He demanded to take a decision at the G-20 conference to collect compensation from the countries responsible for climate change and to adopt appropriate climate policies immediately.

জলবায়ু ন্যায্যতা’র দাবিতে আজ ৮ই সেপ্টেম্বর, শুক্রবার, সকাল ১০ টায় রাজধানীর শাহবাগে জাতীয় জাদুঘর এর সামনে মানববন্ধন, সাইকেল র‌্যালি ও বিষয়ভিত্তিক মূকাভিনয় প্রদর্শিত হয়েছে। জি-২০ সম্মেলনকে সামনে রেখে ওয়াটারকিপার্স বাংলাদেশ, ইকুইটি বিডি, ইয়ুথ নেট ফর ক্লাইমেট জাস্টিস, সেন্টার ফর পার্টিসিপেটরি রিসার্স এন্ড ডেভেলপমেন্ট, ব্রতী, গ্লোবাল ল’থিংকার্স সোসাইটি, বাংলাদেশ কৃষক ফেডারেশন, সুন্দরবন ও উপকূল সুরক্ষা আন্দোলন ও বাংলাদেশ সাইকেল লেন বস্তবায়ন পরিষদ যৌথভাবে এই কর্মসূচীর আয়োজন করে।
কর্মসূচীর সভাপতি ব্রতীর প্রধান নির্বাহী শারমিন মুরশিদ বলেন, জি-২০ জোটভুক্ত দেশগুলো জলবায়ু সংকটের জন্য সবচেয়ে বেশি দায়ী। শিল্পোন্নত দেশগুলোর অনিয়ন্ত্রিত কার্বন নিঃসরণে বর্তমানে সারাবিশ্ব একটি সংকটের মুখোমুখি হয়েছে। এই প্রেক্ষাপটে, দায়ী দেশগুলো ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ দেশগুলোকে বিভিন্ন ক্ষতিপূরণমূলক অর্থনৈতিক ও কারিগরি সহায়তা দেওয়ার আবশ্যকতা থাকলেও তারা সেটা না করে উপরন্তু গ্লোবাল সাউথের দেশগুলোর জন্য ঋণের ফাঁদ তৈরীর মতো হঠকারী পরিকল্পনা বাস্তবায়নে কাজ করছে। এছাড়াও যে সকল ইতিবাচক সিদ্ধান্ত বিভিন্ন সম্মেলনে গৃহীত হয়েছে তার অধিকাংশই সম্মেলন কক্ষের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ ছিলো। তাই এই কর্মসূচীর মাধ্যমে আমরা আগামীতে জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনে ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ দেশগুলোর জন্য জি-২০ সম্মেলনে পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ ও তা বাস্তবায়নে কার্যকর পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণের দাবি জানাই।
ওয়াটারকিপার্স বাংলাদেশের সমন্বয়ক শরীফ জামিল বলেন, ”জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের প্রেক্ষাপটে আমাদের মতো গরিব দেশগুলো চরম বিপর্যয়ের সম্মুখীন। জি-২০ সম্মেলনে প্রত্যেকবার বিভিন্ন প্রতিশ্রুতি দেয়া হলেও তা বাস্তবায়নে নির্জীব ভূমিকা পালন করে থাকে। পাশাপাশি, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনে দায়ী দেশগুলো তাদের দায় এড়িয়ে ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ দেশগুলোকে বিভিন্ন কৌশলে ঋণের ফাদে ফেলার কর্মসূচী গ্রহণ করে। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের জন্য দায়ী দেশগুলোর কাছ থেকে ক্ষতিপূরণ আদায় ও অনতিবিলম্বে  উপযোগী জলবায়ু নীতি গ্রহণের জন্য জি-২০ সম্মেলনে সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণের দাবি জানান তিনি।
