On March 31, 2024, the 11th River Talkie under the project “Promoting democratic governance and collective advocacy for environmental protection in Dhaka city. (Phase II)” of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, supported by Counterpart International and USAID was held on the bank of river Balu at Itakhola, Trimohoni, Khilgaon, Dhaka. The topic of this river dialogue was “River protection: challenges and opportunities for action”. The program started at 12:45 PM and ended at 02:15 PM. The Project Lead, Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Sharif Jamil anchored the show. The Guest Speakers of the program were Mohammad Akbar Hossain, Councilor of Ward No. 75, Dhaka South City Corporation, and Political Activist, Bangladesh Nationalist Party; Freedom Fighter Mohammad Omar Ali, Chief Coordinator, Ward No. 75, 12th Parliamentary Election Committee, Bangladesh Awami League, and Former General Secretary, Nasirabad Union (now Ward No. 75), Bangladesh Awami League; Mir Mohammad Ali, Assistant Professor & Chairman in the Dept. of Aquaculture at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and Ms. Zannati Akhter Ruma, River Activist, Former Women Member of Nasirabad Union Parishad and Member of Barogram Unnayan Sangha. In this river dialogue, apart from the main negotiators, local people from various professions participated. All those present at the event recognized the need to protect the Balu River and pledged to work together to protect the river in the future.
