A three-day strategic workshop was held in the Sundarbans from February 17 to 19, 2025, organized by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh. The workshop featured various sessions and programs aimed at environmental protection, climate justice, and strategies for addressing regional environmental challenges.
On Monday, February 17, 2025, the workshop was inaugurated by Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of DHORA and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh. The inaugural session was moderated by Md. Noor Alam Sk., Coordinator of Sundarban Rokhhay Amra and Pasur River Waterkeeper.
In the second session, presided over and moderated by Sharif Jamil, Md. Ikbal Faruk, Research and Implementation Manager of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, presented the activities of Waterkeepers Bangladesh and the Blue Planet Initiative (BPI) over the past year. Mamun Kabir, Publicity Coordinator of DHORA, presented the organization's activities from the past year.
The third session of the first day included a group work session to identify climate change-induced and human-made environmental challenges and to formulate action programs. Participants were divided into two groups: Waterkeepers Bangladesh Coastal Group and DHORA Bangladesh Group, where they identified key issues and proposed initiatives. The Waterkeepers Bangladesh Coastal Group was facilitated by Md. Ikbal Faruk and Sayeed Hossain, while the DHORA Bangladesh Group was facilitated by Foysal Ahmed, Office Coordinator of DHORA, and Mamun Kabir, Publicity Coordinator of DHORA.
The fourth session, chaired and moderated by Sharif Jamil, focused on integrating stakeholders into the climate justice movement. Abhishek Shrestha, Program Director of Digo Bikas Institute Nepal shared his experiences in stakeholder engagement in Nepal. Following this, participants conducted a group work session to identify key stakeholders in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and other parts of the country. Facilitators for this session included Mir Mohammad Ali, Foysal Ahmed, Ikbal Faruk, and Mamun Kabir.
The fifth session featured a debate competition titled "Branding with Funding Kills Environmental Movements." Speaking in favor of the motion were Mezbah Uddin Khan, Mushfiq Arif, and Delwar Hossain, while Md. Noor Alam Sk., Ziaur Rahman, and Afzal Hossain opposed it. The debate was judged by Mir Mohammad Ali, Foysal Ahmed, and Enamul Haque.
On February 18, the second day of the workshop, a review of the previous day's activities was conducted, facilitated by Ikbal Faruk and Mamun Kabir.
In the second session of the day, presided over and moderated by Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of DHORA and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, a discussion was held on Artivism. Amalen Sathananthar, Founder and Asian Programs Director of The Artivist Network, Malaysia presented insights on environmental activism strategies, design, resources, and materials.
During the third session, a group work session was conducted to develop a one-year action plan for DHORA and Waterkeepers Bangladesh. Bangladesh was divided into five regions to identify key issues, affected communities, and necessary interventions. This session was facilitated by Sharif Jamil, Ikbal Faruk, and Mamun Kabir.
In the final session of the day, presided over and moderated by Sharif Jamil, a discussion on Bangladesh’s Energy Pathway was presented by Ikbal Faruk. The session included contributions from Md. Noor Alam Sk. (leader from Mongla), Mezbah Uddin Khan (leader from Patuakhali), Arifur Rahman (leader from Taltoli), Faridul Alam Shahin (leader from Cox’s Bazar), and Delwar Hossain (leader from Pekua).
On the final day, Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of DHORA and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh led a session where participants formulated an action plan for the next year.
The workshop concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, conducted by Md. Noor Alam Sheikh, the Coordinator of Sundarban Rokhhay Amra and the Pasur River Waterkeeper.
