Waterkeepers Bangladesh proudly congratulates Tofazzal Sohel, Khowai River Waterkeeper, for being honored with the distinguished Terry Backer Award at the Waterkeeper Alliance's Water and Climate Summit. This international award, named after the late Long Island Soundkeeper and Connecticut House of Representatives member Terry Backer, recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to waterbody and river conservation across the world.
Tofazzal Sohel, a passionate advocate for river protection, has been tirelessly working to safeguard the Khowai River and other waterbodies in Habiganj since 2006. His efforts, which include raising awareness, organizing local movements, and combating pollution, have made a significant impact on the protection of Bangladesh's vital water ecosystems. Tofazzal has been affiliated with Waterkeeper Alliance since 2014, and his decade-long dedication has now been celebrated on an international platform.
At the Waterkeeper Alliance’s closing ceremony in Milwaukee, the award was presented by South Asia Representative and nominator, Sharif Jamil, in the presence of over 300 Waterkeeper members from around the globe. The recognition also honored Lisa Rinaman, St. Johns Riverkeeper from North Carolina, USA, for her contributions.
Upon receiving the award, Tofazzal Sohel expressed his gratitude, saying:
"It is a great honor to have my work recognized at such a level. This award not only validates the years of sacrifice and commitment but also motivates me to continue the fight to protect our rivers. We have a responsibility to future generations to safeguard these essential water bodies."
The Terry Backer Award, which was first introduced in 2016, is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of water and environmental conservation. It is awarded to Waterkeepers both within and outside of the U.S. for their efforts to protect rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh takes immense pride in Tofazzal Sohel’s achievement. His work exemplifies the power of grassroots activism and the impact that dedicated individuals can have on environmental conservation. We believe this honor will further inspire communities across Bangladesh to join hands in preserving our precious natural resources.
