On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a day-long training workshop titled "Coastal Environment Conservation and Local Leadership Development" was held at the China Park Restaurant in Kolapara, Patuakhali. The event was jointly organized by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh. The primary objective of the workshop was to raise awareness among local communities about protecting the coastal environment, enhance leadership qualities, and encourage active participation in sustainable coastal management.
Sharif Jamil, the Central Member Secretary of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), attended the workshop as the chief guest. The session was presided over by Mejbah Uddin Mannu, Coastal Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh. Other notable guests included Iqbal Faruk, Head of Research and Implementation of Waterkeepers Bangladesh; Tofazzal Hossain, Member Secretary of DHORA Hobiganj; and environmental activist Kamal Hossain Roni.
At the workshop, the chief guest Sharif Jamil, Central Member Secretary of Dhritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), stated that to protect coastal communities, everyone must work together in unity. He emphasized the need to build movements to safeguard rivers, seas, and aquatic resources. To ensure the livelihood and welfare of fishermen, we must act with social responsibility. He noted that no single effort is sufficient; only our collective strength and responsible leadership can bring sustainable change. He added that today’s training is the first step toward that journey.
Participants in the workshop discussed various issues. They highlighted the importance of raising awareness among local communities, promoting environmentally friendly farming, and actively contributing to the welfare of fishermen. Local fisherman Hasan shared that currently, the Andharmanik River is devoid of fish. Due to river siltation and pollution, the livelihoods of fishermen are under threat. On the other hand, farmer Sultan Gazi said, “I don’t use pesticides. I grow vegetables naturally.”
After the training, participants shared that they had learned how to protect the local environment and enhance their leadership qualities. They expressed that such workshops would strengthen their skills and sense of responsibility in coastal conservation and inspire the local community to come together and take effective initiatives.
