On April 30, 2025, Waterkeepers Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DoE), observed International Noise Awareness Day under the slogan “No More Noise Pollution, We Want Healthy Life.” Representing Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Ikbal Faruk, Head of Research, emphasized that traffic, construction, and commercial activities are major sources of noise pollution.
DoE data shows that 11.7% of Bangladesh’s population suffers hearing loss due to noise. Alarmingly, 97% of students say their studies are disrupted by car horns. Additionally, 71% report headaches, 43% sleep disturbances, and 49% irritability. Noise pollution is also linked to hypertension, cognitive issues in children, and pregnancy complications.
Faruk urged strict enforcement of the Noise Pollution Control Rules 2006, Road Transport Act 2018, Bangladesh Environmental Conservation Act 1995, and WHO guidelines to ensure a noise-free, healthy environment.
