On June 27, 2025, a tree plantation and environmental awareness program was held at the premises of Chunati Meherunnesa Secondary School in Chunati Union, Lohagara Upazila, Chattogram, in celebration of World Environment Day. The event was jointly organized by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Waterkeepers Bangladesh, and GORJOWNN Well Fare Organisation with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of trees in protecting the environment and the harmful effects of plastic waste.
The program was presided over by freedom fighter Syed Abul Mabud, with Ms. Sanjida Rahman, coordinator of Chunati Rokhhay Amra. The event was attended by Md. Inamul Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Lohagara, as the Chief Guest. Other special guests included Forest Conservator Dr. Molya Rezaul Karim, Officer-in-Charge of Lohagara Police Station Md. Arifur Rahman, Head Teacher of Chunati Meherunnesa Secondary School Rashedul Haque, President of the Nursery Owners’ Association Mr. Hamidur Rahman, environmental activists Rahik Rahi, Ehteshamul Haque Romel, Jawad Bin Arif, School Management Committee Member Bashir Uddin Faruqi, and Gorjon Samaj Kalyan Sangstha’s Joint General Secretary Farzana Urmi.
Forest Conservator Dr. Molya Rezaul Karim stated, “The Garjon trees of Chattogram are a part of our heritage. Chunati forest is considered one of the model forests in Bangladesh, yet some locals are involved in its destruction. Only our awareness and resistance can protect the environment.” The Upazila Nirbahi Officer emphasized the role of the young generation in environmental conservation. We must all become aware to prevent plastic pollution, he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Police Station Arifur Rahman asked the students to call 999 in case of any kind of harassment or injustice if they witnessed. “The law is always on your side”, he added.
Speakers at the event discussed the significance of trees for environmental protection, the impact of plastic waste, and the importance of raising awareness. They emphasized the importance of planting and caring for trees and urged everyone to contribute to the greening of their homes and communities.
One of the highlights of the program was the distribution of one thousand tree saplings among students. A committee has been formed to monitor the care of these saplings, and it was announced that the top ten students showing the best care will be awarded after six months. The program concluded with a tree-planting session in the school grounds with the participation of the guests.
