A powerful and provocative panel discussion was held at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, titled: “Hydropower is a False Climate Solution that Produces Counterfeit Carbon Credits” on 17 November 2025 at the Side Event Room 4. The panel challenged the mainstream narrative that hydropower is a clean and sustainable energy source. Sharif Jamil, Coordinator, Waterkeepers Bangladesh participated the event as one of the speakers. In his presentation Sharif Jamil said, hydropower is being established as a clean source of energy in COP space! This doesn’t merely alter the entire river basin; hydropower has made a significant contribution to the Global Methane Emission. For Bangladesh, we are at the bottom of the mighty GBM systems. We don’t accept it.
