A seminar titled “The transition to Renewable Energy: Challenges and Opportunities” was held 27th September 2025 in Dhaka, culminating in in-depth discussions and policy recommendations on the critical importance of rapidly transitioning to renewable energy to combat climate change and achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Jointly organized by Dhoritri Rokkhay Amra (DHORA) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh, the event took place at the ATM Shamsul Haque Auditorium of the (CIRDAP). The seminar brought together leading experts, academics, and young climate activists from across the country.
Speakers at the seminar unanimously agreed that increasing investment in renewable energy and formulating a rapid transition strategy are essential to reduce Bangladesh’s reliance on fossil fuels and ensure a greener, more equitable future. However, the lack of technological capacity, economic hurdles, and the absence of a coordinated policy remain major challenges in this transition.
The session was chaired by Dr. Muzibur Rahman Howladar, Advisor of DHORA and former Chairman of the National River Conservation Commission. The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Sazed Kamal, a renowned renewable energy and sustainable development expert from Brandeis University, USA.
Other distinguished speakers included Professor Anu Muhammad, Former Professor, Department of Economics, Jahangirnagar University; Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary, Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA); Md. Ashiqur Rahman, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Patuakhali Science and Technology University; Dr. Shakila Aziz, Assistant Professor, School of Business and Economics, United International University; Shafiqul Alam, Lead Energy Analyst for Bangladesh, Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Dr. Shawkat Ara Begum, Bangladesh Program Director, Tara Climate Foundation.
Additionally, representatives from youth climate organizations addressed the seminar, including Sohanoor Rahman (Director, Brighters), Jubayer Protim (Lead Safeguard and Policy Making, Climate Frontier), Shams Khan (Executive Director, Global Law Thinkers Society), Ahsan Rony (Executive Director, Mission Green Bangladesh), Asaduzzaman Tuhin (Founding President, OAB Foundation), and Mastura Khatun (Focal Point Gender Justice and Equity, Youth Environment and Development Organization).
