Tree Plantation Campaigns Promote Climate Action and Environmental Stewardship in Cox’s Bazar

Waterkeepers Bangladesh, together with local partners, organized two tree plantation and environmental awareness programmes in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on 1 and 3 August 2026, engaging hundreds of students and community members in efforts to promote climate action, biodiversity conservation, and a greener future.
The first programme, Tree Plantation Campaign 2026, was held on 1 August at Patabari High School, organized by the Patabari High School Planeteers Club with the support of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), and Torongo Foundation.
Held under the theme, “Plant Trees, Build a Greener Bangladesh: Towards a Green Belt Across the Coast,” the campaign combined environmental education with youth engagement. Students participated in an art competition and interactive awareness sessions on climate change and renewable energy before receiving tree saplings to plant and care for in their communities.
Building on this effort, a second programme was organized on 3 August at Morichapalong High School. Jointly organized by Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Cox’s Bazar Press Club, Green Cox’s Bazar, and Prantik Chashi Samaj Unnayan Sangstha, the initiative focused on expanding green cover and raising environmental awareness among students.
A total of 600 fruit, forest, and medicinal tree saplings were distributed among approximately 350 students, encouraging them to plant and nurture trees as part of a long-term commitment to environmental conservation.
The programme was attended by Panna Akter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Ukhiya, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the students, she emphasized the importance of youth leadership in environmental protection and encouraged them to actively participate in safeguarding nature. Speakers also highlighted the role of tree planting, biodiversity conservation, and environmentally friendly school campuses in addressing the growing impacts of climate change.
The event concluded with a symbolic tree plantation on the school grounds, where guests and students planted saplings together and reaffirmed their commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future.
