On 13th March, Waterkeepers Bangladesh along with some other organizations hosted different activities observing the International Day of Action for Rivers at Gabtoli, Dhaka. Human chain, street mime, basket distribution among the oarsman of Turag River and symbolic cleaning were undertaken while observing the day. Leaders and activists from different organization address the program and took part in all of the segments of the program.
Dr Mujibur Rahman Howlader, former chairman of National River Conservation Commission was the chief guest of the program while Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of DHORA and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, presided over the program.
Faisal Ahmed, editor of River Bangla; delivered the welcome speech, while the program was moderated by Ibnul Syed Rana, chairman of Nirapad Development Foundation. It was addressed, among others, by media personalities Solaiman Sukhan, Meer Mohammad Ali, an assistant professor at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University; Monir Hossain Chowdhury of ERDA; Iqbal Faruk of Waterkeepers Bangladesh; Khandaker Faruk Ahmed, chairman of Trinamool Unnoyon Sonngstha; Umme Salma from SSKS; Raoman Smita, Israt Jahan Lota from Bonolota Unnayon Songstha; Lal Mohammad from Amin Bazar Ghat Shromik Union; Syed Taposh from Buriganga Riverkeeper; Nitto Rajbonshi from Turag Rokkha Andolon; Amzad Ali Lal from Amin Bazar Ghat Shromik Union; and others. A street mime was performed by Abu Shadat Md Sayem from OCREC. Many other activists and local people appeared at the program to observe the day.
The program was held in different places in Bangladesh including Dhaka, Kutubdia, Mongla, Pekua, Sylhet, Taltoli, Kalapara, Pathorghata, Cox’s Bazar, Maheshkhali, Mymensingh and Jamalpur.
