On May 08, 2019, Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Pashur River Waterkeeper jointly organized a discussion meeting on “Save Pashur, Save the Sundarbans” at hotel Pashur in Mongla, Bagerhat. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Sharif Jamil, joint secretary of BAPA and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh. Pashur River waterkeeper Md. Nur Alam Shekh, Director of the Sundarbans Museum Subhash Chandra Biswas, Lecturer Manoj Kanti Biswas, Mili Roy, Geeta Halder, Maharuf Billah, Pratap Mondal, Rakesh Sana and others spoke at the meeting. People from different occupations including Pashur River Waterkeeper volunteers, fishermen, Bawali (mangrove palm leaves collector), and Mawali (Honey collector from the Sundarbans) were present at the meeting.
Sharif Jamil told that, Pashur River pollution and erosion are increasing. The uncontrolled industrialization is contributing in pollution of water, soil and air at all levels. Due to the increase of water vessels movement in the river and due to weather pattern change river erosion is increasing. People becoming more displaced than before. To prevent the erosion and pollution, Government should take proper initiative to save the Pashur River. The discussants reiterated that the Sundarbans cannot be saved unless we protect the river Pashur from pollution and degradation.
