Barishal, 16 September 2026: Farmers, workers, environmental activists and civil society representatives in Barishal have called for the rapid expansion of renewable energy in agriculture to promote environmentally sustainable farming and protect livelihoods.
A rally, human chain and procession were organised on Wednesday in front of Barishal Town Hall by Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Bangladesh Krishok Federation and 34 other likeminded organisations. Following the rally and human chain, participants marched from Town Hall to the Shaheed Minar.
Badrul Alam, President of Bangladesh Krishok Federation, said agriculture must move away from fossil fuel dependence to become climate- and environment-friendly. He called for the rapid expansion of solar and other renewable energy sources to reduce farmers’ production costs and protect the environment, while ensuring that renewable energy systems remain under the control of farmers and communities.
Zayed Iqbal Khan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Krishok Federation, said the energy and climate crises are closely interconnected. He called for renewable energy development to be integrated with agriculture and food systems, alongside the development of decentralised, community-owned renewable energy systems.
Speakers noted that rising energy costs for irrigation, agricultural machinery and other farming activities are increasing farmers’ production expenses. Making affordable renewable energy accessible to farmers, they said, could help reduce costs while protecting the environment.
They also stressed the need to ensure the participation and rights of women farmers, including access to appropriate renewable energy technologies and training.
The speakers called on the government to take effective measures to expand renewable energy in agriculture and establish decentralised energy systems with meaningful participation from farmers and local communities.
The programme carried a clear message: “Renewable Energy Now for Climate- and Environment-Friendly Agriculture.”
