Waterkeepers Bangladesh organized the tenth river talkie on “Political Stability for Environmental Protection” at Jhauchor, Keraniganj, Dhaka at the bank of Buriganga River on 27th December 2023 as part of its advocacy process. Sharif Jamil, Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, acted as the moderator in the river talkie. Sunil Shubho Roy, Presidium Member of Jatiya Party, Mustafa Alamgir Ratan, Head of Media Department of Bangladesh Workers Party, Preeti Kana Sikder, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Faisal Ahmed, Editor of River Bangla, and leaders of various social and environmental organizations participated at the program. Discussants of the river talkie urged all stakeholders including government bodies, members of all political parties, administrative bodies, law enforcement agencies, and citizens to join hands and adopt holistic solutions to save the environment from pollution and stop the encroachment of rivers.
In the opening speech moderator Sharif Jamil said, “Numerous structures on the banks of Dhaka’s Buriganga river have been illegally constructed by occupying the river. When the government plans to evict illegal squatters, it should involve all ministries and public-private institutions”.
