On March 31, 2024, in Dhaka’s Khilgaon area, a River Talkie titled “River protection: challenges and opportunities for action” was organized by Waterkeepers Bangladesh. The program, led by the Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Sharif Jamil, hosted various stakeholders including local councilors, academics, environmentalists, and community members.
The attendees emphasized the deteriorating condition of Dhaka’s surrounding rivers due to pollution, stressing the need for concerted efforts to address the issue. Other speakers echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing community involvement, regular monitoring, and stricter enforcement of environmental regulations.
Participants acknowledged the historical significance of rivers in daily life but lamented their current polluted state. They emphasized the importance of educating future generations about river conservation and increasing community engagement to restore the rivers’ health.
