On 10th January 2017, a consultation meeting took place at Mongla Kanainagor on creating awareness about Pashur River and riverbank erosion to saving the natural habitat of the Sundarbans with the villagers, arranged by Pashur River Waterkeeper. The meeting was chaired by MD. Noor Alam Sheikh, Pashur River Waterkeeper while Sharif Jamil, Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Joint Secretary of BAPA was present as the Chief Guest. Among others, Abdul Karim Kim, Surma River Waterkeeper, villagers Anil Mandal and Nazmul Haque spoke in the event. In the discussion session the speakers requested the Government to take immediate necessary initiatives to save Pashur River from riverbank erosion and the endangered natural habitat of Sundarbans. A large number of families are already displaced due to the erosion without any compensation and thereby face hardships of life. The discussion session encouraged the participation of the locals.
Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Sharif Jamil said, ‘for the prevention of river erosion and destruction to the villagers, we will be beside the people but our primary interest is to protect the river Pashur and the Sundarbans. However, not merely for the environment activists also for the villagers themselves, we need united movement to protect river Pahsur and the Sundarbans.”
